Muesli and granola can be found in supermarkets in all kinds of varieties and price ranges. We often wonder, how a product that’s made with very basic ingredients, has to be sometimes so expensive. If you want to save some money and also want to make sure that you only get what you like, you might want to take matters into your own hands. Our simple Chocolate Granola is prepared in an Air Fryer and is (in our opinion) better than anything you can buy in the store. ;P

Nowadays, you can find all kinds of breakfast cereals and stuff like that on supermarket shelves. Some come with chocolate, some without, some with or without fruit, nuts, etc. The selection is almost endless. What many of these products have in common – they typically contain quite a big amount of sugar. Why, you might ask… Breakfast does not really have to be super sweet, right?!
In addition to the lower cost of homemade granola, the sugar »thing« is another reason why we prefer to mix our own muesli and granola. When mixing oats, nuts, and other ingredients, you have complete control. If you don’t want sugar in there, don’t add it. If you like it sweet, you can opt for maple syrup or honey instead of regular sugar. Pretty much everything is better than regular sugar. ;P

We’ve used a little maple syrup to sweeten the granola and added some chopped dark chocolate at the end – if you don’t want that, just leave it out. You may need to use a little more coconut oil when leaving out the syrup. You want the cocoa to stick well to the oats and seeds. You will notice quickly when mixing everything together and can adjust accordingly.
Apart from that – preparing baked granola is super easy. You simply add oats and seeds to a bowl, add spices and liquids (coconut oil & maple syrup), and then throw everything into an Air Fryer (see pictures). If you don’t have this type of device, you can bake the granola in a regular oven as well. An oven temperature of 180°C (350°F) and 8-10 minutes of baking time should get you a similar result. Check in between to see how far along the granola is. You don’t want burnt oats or seeds in your cereal bowl. ;P

Once the chocolate granola is ready, it can be used in many ways. Simply with a little milk, as part of a breakfast bowl with yogurt, Skyr and a few berries… or simply as a decorative sprinkle for desserts. Stored correctly (airtight in a cool place), baked granola should last for at least 2 weeks… provided it isn’t eaten completely beforehand. ;P
If you can’t think of any uses for the granola right now, except for soaking it in a generous amount of milk, we might have something suitable for you. How about some (Vegan) Overnight Oats which can be refined with some chocolate granola? Doesn’t sound too bad, right?!
Or maybe something a little more elaborate (but superb): Apple Pie Oatmeal with Granola. When it comes to breakfast, this is one of our absolute favorites. It’s like an apple pie in a bowl for breakfast. Absolutely delicious!

75g Haferflocken* (Kleinblatt)
15g Mandeln oder Haselnüsse*, gehobelt
2 EL gemischte Saaten*
1 EL Kakaopulver*
1/4 TL Salz
1/8 TL Vanillepulver*
50g (Bio) Kokosöl*, geschmolzen
50g Ahornsirup* (oder Honig)
50g Zarbitterschokolade, gehackt

DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
1. Mix the spelt flakes, rolled oats, sliced almonds or hazelnuts, mixed seeds, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla powder in a bowl. Melt the coconut oil briefly in the microwave, then add it to the bowl along with the maple syrup and mix until well combined. The mixture should look evenly wet and chocolatey.
2. Set the Air Fryer to a temperature of 170°C (340°F). Line the basket with baking paper* and spread the granola evenly on the baking paper. If you only have limited space in your Air Fryer, you may need to bake in two batches. Bake the granola for about 10-12 minutes. Mix the granola repeatedly so it gets evenly baked. Remove the baked granola from the Air Fryer and let it cool down completely.
3. Mix the cooled granola with the chopped chocolate and store it in a well-sealing glass jar or similar container. The granola should be good to eat for at least two weeks, if stored properly.
