Hi, my name is Marc. I’m a graphic designer by day and well… a graphic designer by night ;P
I love my job, but in between, I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and (former) colleagues encourage me to bake – for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers – and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
I live in Berlin – though I love this city, I have already traveled a lot around the world. From my various visits to the U.S., I brought back home my addiction for cupcakes. They are perfect little things – a dessert, a cake and all in a convenient size. The inconvenient thing about baking these little things – you normally bake a minimum of let’s say 12 cupcakes – which gives you the chance to eat…let’s say 12 of them. But luckily this is the point where friends and colleagues come in again ;)
INSPIRATION
When I started looking for cupcake recipes, my main sources were, of course, American recipe websites, food blogs, and books. I found tons of great and creative recipes not only for cupcakes. Saying that – there is a snag to it – one of the reasons for this blog…
ABOUT THE BLOG
This blog is not only a list of recipes I tried and wanted to share. When I was baking with American recipes, there were often ingredients listed, I had problems getting here in Germany or not getting at all. For example “Light Corn Syrup” or “Cream of tartar” which I needed for a recipe for Halloween cupcakes – something I have seen in every big supermarket in the U.S. – but here in Germany it took me almost a week to find it and let’s say – I did not exactly get it for 99¢ ;) Another good example is my favorite ingredient in American recipes: a box of cake mix! ;)
I appreciate a recipe that is easy and quick to do – but baking with pre-made mixes is something that just makes no sense for me. It is so easy to get the exact same result with basic ingredients you (normally) have at home! Not to mention the ingredients in those mixes you probably don’t want to have in your baked goods at the end…. and let’s be honest – the “time saving factor” is not that big ;)
So this is it. Having all the fun, but avoiding or better said replacing “tricky” ingredients (not everybody has an American supermarket around the corner) with the ones everybody should have at hand and going back to the roots – or in my own words – BAKE TO THE ROOTS! (yes, this is the reason for the highly creative name of the blog)
I know – not everything can be replaced – for example, Nutella can not be replaced(!) – but I am trying to do my best and give alternatives and maybe some day I will find a solution for the Nutella problem (still working on it).
That’s it. I hope you like what I do here. Feel free to give me any feedback. I’ll try to get back to you ASAP :)
On your marks. Get set. BAKE (TO THE ROOTS)!
Cheers,
Marc
