Blueberries are quite popular berries I think. Not only here in Germany – all over the world. The U.S. and the U.K. have many delicious recipes with those little blue fellas you can make – not only sweet stuff though. Blueberries also work well in savory dishes. Here you will find those blue berries almost 100% in sweet bakes. Since I already have quite a collection of recipes with blueberries I decided to make a little list with my “Top 15 Favorite Blueberry Recipes”. Everything from cake to scones – if you like blueberries you might like this little collection. Hopefully, you can find something you haven’t made so far ;)
Blueberries can be used in many ways – as I mentioned before already – not only in bakes. Here in Germany (or better said Europe) the blueberry season is mainly from the end of June to September. Around this time you get fresh blueberries from local farmers everywhere. Throughout the year fresh blueberries are available from other places in the world. Most bakes I know work well with frozen blueberries, so freezing a large batch of locally grown berries at the end of the season and using them the rest of the year works pretty well. That’s why I always have some in my freezer :P Waiting to end up in a cake or on top of my overnight oats in the morning…
Blueberries have many health benefits… allegedly ;) Packed with vitamin a and e, full of antioxidants and even good for your skin when it comes to fighting wrinkles. Well… I use them mostly because I like the flavor and they do not add much sugar to my diet, so I can snack them from time to time when I crave something sweet.
I could tell you much more about blueberries and their health benefits, but let’s talk about recipes now. I got quite a lot of them and I think you might like them… so let’s get started! ;)
1. Blueberry Polenta Upside Down Cake
Upside Down Cakes may not belong in the category “prettiest cakes of the world” but they are definitely in the top ten of the most delicious cakes! If you don’t believe me, you should try this Blueberry Polenta Upside Down Cake – great flavors because of the blueberries and a great texture because of the polenta used in the cake. Fluffy and moist. For me the best combination you can get. Did I mention “easy peasy to prepare”? Makes it a strong contender for the “best cake in the world” :P
2. Blueberry Cheesecakes in Glass Jars
If you like cheesecake, you will love these cheesecakes baked in individual glass jars topped with blueberries. I love cakes in glass jars – no fuss about who gets the biggest slice, everyone gets exactly the same ;) You could add something else on top of the cheesecake, but that would mean you are missing out on that delicious flavor combination with the blueberries and the cakes would be only half as good as they are now :P
3. Quadruple Berry Pie
Blueberries are the ideal berries for pies. Great flavors and lovely color when baked. If you combine them with some more fruits or other berries, you will get this Quadruple Berries Pie. A delicious pie that tastes like summer! The best about this pie – you can make it easy with frozen berries and enjoy it any time of the year. No need to wait for next summer when the berries are in season ;)
4. Blueberry Pudding Galette
Galettes are normally an easy way to get something delicious onto your plate. This Galette with blueberries and pudding is no exception. The dough and pudding are easy and quick to prepare – then you throw some blueberries from the freezer on top and bake it. It could not be easier! Well… you could buy pre-made dough and pudding, but hey… making that at home really takes no time at all… ;) Anyway – the result will be delicious! And luckily with the frozen berries, you can enjoy this galette all year round – not only during blueberry season ;)
5. Blueberry Sour Cream Pie
A Blueberry Sour Cream Pie like this one here I had for the first time in Canada and fell in love with it at first bite. The delicious blueberry filling with the sour cream, the crisp bottom, and top – absolutely awesome combination! The pie might not win a beauty contest against a nicely decorated apple pie or something like that – but flavor-wise definitely a winner! You should definitely make that pie one day if you like blueberries! With a little blob of whipped cream…. mmmm!
6. Blueberry Cheesecake Pie
When it comes to blueberries this Blueberry Cheesecake Pie is definitely one of my favorites! Top list of all times! I mean… do I really have to tell you why? It’s quite obvious. A cheesecake that is also a pie with a thick layer of blueberries with sauce on top… what’s not to love about that?! This pie won my heart instantly and many others I think. Every time I make it it’s gone in an instant ;)
7. Blueberry Lemon Cake with Buttercream Flowers
If you look at this gorgeous cake you will not recognize any blueberries at first, I assume. The focus is completely on the buttercream flowers on top of this Blueberry Lemon Cake. But as soon as you cut into the cake you will see the blue little fellas and when you eat it you will definitely enjoy the nice flavors of the blueberries in combination with the lemon. Always a winning flavor combination!
8. Dutch Baby with Blueberries
Dutch Babies are perfect for a good start into your day. Light, fluffy and delicious! Maybe not for every day of the week since they take some time to prepare – so probably nothing for your Monday morning right before going to work, but on the weekend when you got some time on your hands… for sure a good alternative to bread or bread rolls in the morning. Especially with some blueberries thrown on top for some additional sweetness and flavor.
9. Cookies with Blueberries and White Chocolate
Did you know you can incorporate blueberries also in cookies? Works actually pretty well as you can see here with these Blueberry White Chocolate Cookies. You might do not want to use the big cultivated blueberries since they are a bit too bulky, but the smaller wild blueberries are perfect here. They also taste better in my opinion, so using the wild ones is definitely the right decision here… not only because you want to avoid huge bumps in the cookies :P
10. Blueberry Lemon Loaf Cake
Blueberries and lemon are a match made in heaven. Here in Germany, you would probably phrase it differently… more like “Passt wie Arsch auf Eimer” which would translate like “the ass matches the bucket” ;) Anyway. Really nice flavor combination in an easy loaf cake. The cake might work with some more blueberries since mine here looks a bit sad with those few blue spots inside the cake, though they might have collected somewhere else in the cake… I don’t remember. But more is more! ;)
11. Blueberry Hand Pies
If you are on a trip or want to spend some time outside it is always a good idea to have something to eat in your bags or pockets. These Blueberry Hand Pies are perfect as a little snack on the go. Super delicious and easy to pack and to transport. They can be eaten cold or slightly warmed – either way, a great snack option.
12. Blueberry Cupcakes
Cupcakes are almost always a good idea when in need of something sweet for a larger crowd. They are easy to prepare, easy to store and most importantly easy to eat. Normally you don’t even need utensils to devour these little fellas. These Blueberry Cupcakes are no exception to that rule – place one in your hand, lift it up to your mouth and then inhale… :P
13. Easy Peasy Blueberry Mascarpone Cheesecake
Cheesecakes are definitely on my list of favorite bakes on the top. Creamy, rich and delicious! This Easy Peasy Blueberry Mascarpone Cheesecake is a perfect example of this category. The mascarpone melts in your mouth and the blueberries are like little spots of freshness and flavor within the cake. Delicious! ;)
14. Blueberry Cheesecake
Since cheesecakes are so popular (and delicious) I got another one for you – the creamiest cheesecake in the world with a huge mountain of blueberries as a topping. It is really true – this is one of the best cheesecakes in the world! The filling is cooked first and then baked, which makes the cake an absolute dream! You should definitely try this one – my recommendation!
15. Blueberry Lemon Scones
And yet again – a bake where blueberries are in combination with lemon. Who would have guessed that this is a great combination?! Me! :P These Blueberry Lemon Scones are absolutely divine! Packed with flavors, crumbly and delicious. Because of that crumbly texture, they melt immediately in your mouth when you eat them… I am drooling already just thinking of them :P If you did not have scones yet, you should definitely make them one day. Pretty easy bake you will make over and over again.
