Halloween is celebrated in a big way in the US – completely different from what’s happening here in Germany. You might spot a few decorations here and there, but for the vast majority of Germans, October 31st passes by without spider webs, witches, and the like. Same for us here. Though, we do love baking and cooking for Halloween. It’s fun. These little Halloween Monster Burgers are simply too cute not to make, right?!

Perhaps it stems from being told far too often when I was younger not to play with my food. That’s why I love making cute and funny-looking food. These days, playing with food is my job. Well, not playing literally, of course, but I do get to prepare, decorate, and photograph food for my blog however I please. Sometimes, that results in creating a little monster burger for Halloween.
As the saying goes, »we eat with our eyes«. In the case of these monster burgers, you could say you’re literally eating the eyes, too. These cute little guys have been given tongues, teeth, and eyes made from stuffed olives. They look pretty great like that, don’t they?

Making burgers like these is incredibly easy. You just need to pick up some brioche burger buns, big pickles, sliced cheese, stuffed olives, and something to make the patties. That doesn’t necessarily have to be meat – you could easily use a vegetarian or vegan alternative made from beans or soy, for example.
Once you have all the ingredients, you just need to prep the individual components. Trimming the »tongue« and »teeth« to size from the pickle and cheese, skewering the olive eyes, and, of course, shaping and frying the patties. Once that’s done, all that’s left is to bring everything together – layering the ingredients with a nice burger sauce and perhaps some extra lettuce and tomatoes – to assemble the cute monster burgers.

Assembly is quick and easy, and it’s a great activity to do with kids. After all, they are the primary audience for this type of burger. Adults could certainly enjoy these monster burgers too, but the target demographic is really a bit younger…
That’s not to say, of course, that you can’t or shouldn’t make these burgers at any age or for any occasion. If Grandma has a thing for spooky-looking burgers, she’s certainly welcome to have one, too. It doesn’t strictly have to be for Halloween, either.
When it comes to savory Halloween treats, our blog is currently a bit lacking proper recipes. We might need to add a few more options down the line. We do have plenty of sweet treats, though. How about some delicious Halloween »Brainy« Skull Sugar Cookies, for instance? They might sound a bit spooky, but the finished result doesn’t look all that terrifying. In my opinion…
Or how about some simple, kid-friendly Jack O’Lantern Cookies with Dulce de Leche. They aren’t spooky at all – just delicious thanks to the caramel filling. These sandwich cookies are perfect to make throughout the autumn, not only for Halloween. You don’t need the spooky season as an excuse to enjoy them.

INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
(2 burgers)
some oil or butter for frying
about 10.6 oz. (300g) ground beef
some onion powder*
a few chilli flakes*
salt, pepper
2 long pickled gherkin slices
2 slices of Cheddar
4 thin tomato slices or 2 lettuce leaves (optional)
4 pimiento-stuffed green olives
4 toothpicks
some ketchup & mustard
2 brioche burger buns
(2 Burger)
etwas Öl bzw. Butter zum Abraten
etwa 300g Rinderhackfleisch
etwas Zwiebelpulver*
einige Chiliflocken*
Salz, Pfeffer
2 lange Essiggurkenscheiben
2 Scheiben Cheddar
4 dünne Tomatenscheiben oder 2 Salatblätter (optional)
4 grüne Oliven mit Paprikafüllung
4 Zahnstocher
etwas Ketchup & Senf
2 Brioche Burger Buns

DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
1. Season the ground meat with a little onion powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper. Shape it into two large patties and set them aside.
2. Prepare the toppings. Slice a large pickle lengthwise into two strips which serve as tongues. Cut jagged edges into the cheese slices to create teeth, and skewer the olives onto toothpicks for the eyes. Set everything aside.
3. Heat a large frying pan with a little butter and lightly toast the cut sides of the burger buns to your liking. Remove them from the frying pan and set them aside.
4. Add a little more butter or oil to the pan and cook the patties to your preferred level of doneness – for »medium« the meat should reach an internal temperature of about 56–60°C (132-140°F), for example.
5. To assemble the burgers, first spread a little ketchup and mustard on the bottom halves of the buns, then place the patties on top. Next, add the sliced gherkins (for the tongues) and the cheese (for the teeth). Add tomato slices or lettuce if desired, then top with the other half of the bun. Insert the olive skewers into the burgers to serve as eyes. Serve with fries or chips or whatever you like to add.
