Today we got a gnocchi dish that’s a bit different – instead of a savory meal, we have prepared a sweet dessert using simple potato gnocchi. Delicious Sweet Gnocchi with Damson Plum & Apple Compote. We also call it Gnocchi »Schmarrn« in honor of the classic Austrian dessert »Kaiserschmarrn« everybody knows. The two desserts are not really related, but close friends, let’s say it like that. ;P

We have several recipes for Kaiserschmarrn here on the blog – we really like this classic Austrian dessert. That’s why we chose this sweet delight as the base for our gnocchi dish. The recipe is another contribution from us to the BÜRGER recipe collection (www.buerger.de*). If you browse this blog more often, you may have already stumbled across one of our recipes for BÜRGER. Last time, we came up with something for delicious Maultaschen…
There is a lot you can do with gnocchi, Maultaschen, and stuff like that. We always have some gnocchi in the fridge, because they allow us to quickly prepare something delicious for dinner. If you have a package of gnocchi lying around and already tried all the recipes here on the blog, you should definitely check out the recipe finder* on the BÜRGER website. There is a lot more you can cook and bake. The collection is certainly worth taking a look.

As already mentioned, we were inspired by a classic Kaiserschmarrn for our sweet gnocchi. As you might know, the original dessert is a large pancake that is torn into pieces and often served with some kind of compote. But as you can see, there are other ways to do it. ;)
Purists will probably turn up their noses, but we say – try this sweet treat before you complain! Our »Schmarrn« is really delicious! The small potato dumplings are briefly fried in some butter and then tossed in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar – served with a classic plum compote and apple sauce. Empress Sissi (for whom the very first Kaiserschmarrn was allegedly prepared) would certainly have enjoyed the sweet potato dumplings with the fruit compote.

The only (critical) argument we would accept is that our »Schmarrn« is not quite as light and fluffy as the original. But that was never the intention. We like desserts, and if they are substantial, then bring it on! ;P
Currently, this gnocchi »Schmarrn« is the only sweet recipe with gnocchi, Schupfnudeln, etc. here on our blog – but of course, there is more you could do. If you’re interested in sweet recipes like that, just send us a message, and we’ll see what else we can come up with. ;)
We have plenty of savory gnocchi dishes, though. Our delicious Chorizo Gnocchi, for example, are extremely tasty and easy to prepare. Highly recommended! If you like it a little greener, you might want to try our Gnocchi with Mushrooms, Asparagus, Pesto & Burrata. Another very tasty gnocchi dish!
INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
(3 servings)
For the plum compote:
10.6 oz. (300g) Damson plums (or regular plums)
3.4 fl. oz. (100ml) water
1/4 cup (50g) sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 pinch of ground cinnamon
For the apple compote:
2 medium apples (e.g. Granny Smith), peeled & diced
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
2-3 tbsp. water
1 tsp. lemon juice
For the gnocchi »Schmarrn«:
some butter for frying
17.6 oz. (500g) gnocchi (e.g. BÜRGER potato gnocchi*)
2-3 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
some confectioners’ sugar for dusting
(3 Personen)
Für das Zwetschgenkompott:
300g Zwetschgen (oder Pflaumen)
100ml Wasser
50g Zucker
1/2 TL Vanille Extrakt
1 Prise Zimt
Für das Apfelkompott:
2 Äpfel (z.B. Granny Smith), geschält & gewürfelt
2 EL brauner Zucker
1/8 TL Zimt
2-3 EL Wasser
1 TL Zitronensaft
Für den Gnocchi »Schmarrn«:
etwas Butter zum Anbraten
500g Gnocchi (z.B. BÜRGER Kartoffel-Gnocchi*)
2-3 EL brauner Zucker
1/2 TL Zimt
etwas Puderzucker zum Bestäuben

DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
1. Wash, core, and cut the Damson plums into thin wedges. Add the water, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to a small saucepan and bring it to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved, add the plums, reduce the heat, and let them simmer until the fruit starts falling apart – a few firmer pieces are okay. Remove from the heat and let cool down.
2. Next, peel, and core the apples, then cut them into small cubes. Add the apple cubes to a small saucepan, as well as the sugar, cinnamon, water, and lemon juice. Bring everything to a boil and let the apples simmer over medium heat until soft and the liquid in the saucepan is almost gone. Remove from the heat and let cool down.
3. Heat up a frying pan with some butter, add the gnocchi and fry them until nicely browned from all sides. Transfer the gnocchi to a bowl. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle it over the gnocchi and mix well. Transfer the sweet gnocchi to plates or bowls, add the plum and apple compote as well, and dust the gnocchi with confectioners’ sugar to your liking. Serve warm.
Warm servieren.
