A crumble is a simple and quick dessert we love to make whenever we don’t want to put too much effort into preparing something sweet. It’s basically just some fruit or berries topped with crunchy streusels. Really easy! If you think baking it in the oven is too slow, you should try our Easy Air Fryer Apple Crumble. Thanks to some more advanced technology, these little appliances are even faster than a regular oven. In case you have one of these little machines at home, you can now whip up a delicious dessert quickly and easily in there too.

Let’s be honest, most people will probably use their air fryer mostly for fries, chicken wings, and stuff like that. We’re no exception here. At least not entirely. We prepare a few other things in an air fryer due to the job we do here, but fries are definitely at the top of the list when it comes to using this appliance. It’s not really surprising – fries get nice and crispy, don’t take quite as long as in the oven, and unlike the deep-fried specimen, they can all be made without any added fat. Win-win.

When it comes to sweet stuff, many people probably don’t use their air fryer all that often. Unjustly so, as you can see here. You can prepare delicious desserts in an air fryer – often faster and easier than in a regular oven.

Crumbles, also called crisps in the US, or, in German you could say, »Fruchtauflauf mit Streusel« (fruit casserole with streusel topping) – come from British cuisine but are also very popular in the US and other countries. Well, and here at our home as well. Preparing crumbles always follows the same principles – fruit and/or berries are thrown into a baking dish, seasoned if desired, covered with a streusel topping and then baked. Normally, this is done in a conventional oven, but for this recipe, we’ve opted for the slightly faster way to do it. Not drastically faster, but you can definitely save a few minutes. ;P

For this recipe, we used fairly large apple pieces. For that reason they need to go into the air fryer first, before the crumble topping is added and everything is baked together. We like it when the apple pieces are a bit bigger. You don’t have to do it that way, of course. If the apples are cut into smaller pieces, they’ll need a little less time in the air fryer or in an oven. If you were using berries instead of apples, you could skip the first step and just throw them with the streusel topping into an air fryer/oven together and give it a go – those need less time. Just a thought…

As already mentioned, you can prepare much more than just fries, chicken, or meatballs in an air fryer – both savory and sweet. How about a delicious cheesecake made in the air fryer, for example? Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Our simple Air Fryer Cheesecake is a bit smaller than other cheesecakes, but no less delicious! It’s perfect for everyone expecting only a few guests or who does not want to bake a large cake for themselves!

One of the often-mentioned advantages of these machines is, of course, cooking without fat or oil. That’s why the term »air fryer« has become so common, even though these machines are actually small convection ovens, not deep-fryers. But as you can see with fries and stuff like that, »air frying« with the emphasys on »frying» works quite well. For example, our Air Fryer Banana Quark Fritters. Delicious, crispy (normally deep-fried in oil) and not greasy. Sounds great, doesn’t it?!

One last example of a recipe to try in the air fryer: our simple Homemade Chocolate Granola. While you could prepare this in the oven, like most air fryer recipes, the advantage here is that you use less electricity/power and everything is ready slightly faster. Within the time it would take a regular oven to preheat, you’re almost done in an air fryer.

If all that wasn’t enough – we also have a small overview of air fryer recipes on the blog. Admittedly, there aren’t a lot of recipes listed yet, but it’s constantly growing.

    1. Peel, core and chop the apples coarsely. Add them to a heatproof dish/baking thin that fits in your Air Fryer. Add lemon juice, vanilla extract, brown sugar, and cinnamon and mix well. Set your Air Fryer to a temperature of 180°C (350°F) and bake the apples for about 10 minutes. Stir once and bake for 10 minutes more.

    2. While the apples are in the Air Fryer, prepare the streusels. Add the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter to a small bowl and rub everything between your fingers until you get different-sized streusels. Distribute the streusels evenly on top of the pre-baked apples and continue baking for 8-10 minutes at the same temperature until the streusels are lightly browned. Serve the apple crumble with some whipped cream, custard, or vanilla ice cream.
