There are so many things you can do with fresh strawberries. Many people will probably prefer to eat them just as they are, perhaps with a little whipped cream… Well, we also like to use them for baking! A simple Strawberry Crumble is quick and easy to prepare, and it tastes really delicious! Hot berries with crispy streusels and a little vanilla ice cream or vanilla sauce on top… an absolute dream! ;)

Crumbles are considered to be an essential dessert of the British cuisine, although they are also very popular in the US. Where did the Americans get it from? The British, of course. Like so many things. ;P This type of dessert has grown in popularity since/after WW2. Back then (as well as today) it was easier for home bakers to mix up a few streusels and pop them with a few berries or fruit in the oven, instead of baking a full cake.

A crumble may not look particularly pretty, but it always tastes good! That’s a fact. Hot, sweet fruit or berries with crumble on top and a little whipped cream, vanilla sauce or ice cream – what’s not to like?

Crumbles can be made with almost any fruit or berries. Apples and rhubarb, for example, are very popular for this type of dessert. Tart fruit or veggies (rhubarb is a veggie, as we all know) work well with sweet streusels. The combination of tart and sweet challenges all taste buds. ;P

Another thing to keep in mind when using fruits like apples or other stuff that is a bit harder, those things need a bit longer to soften. Strawberries get mushy very quickly – apples are a little more stubborn and take longer. Another option – cutting them very thinly. That usually helps too.

If you can’t find fresh strawberries, for example, in the depths of winter, you can also use frozen berries for this dessert here. They don’t even need to be defrosted before using them. However, the baking time needs to be a bit longer with frozen berries/fruit – about 6-10 minutes more should be enough to defrost anything. A good reason to keep several bags of berries and fruit in the freezer. ;P

Well. Same category, different fruit – our simple Damson Plum Crumble is a great alternative to a classic Damson Plum Cake Tray Bake in the fall. Add a little vanilla custard on top, and you got yourself a perfect dessert for the whole family!

If you want to stick with strawberries and want to keep it simple, take a look at our Easy Strawberry Galette. The dough takes a bit longer to prepare compared to streusels, but that’s simply due to the cooling time that’s needed for that type of dough. Overall, the galette is super easy to prepare.

    1. Wash the strawberries, drain them, remove the green leaves and cut them into pieces. Mix the strawberries with the cornstarch and vanilla bean paste in a large bowl and set aside.

    2. For the streusels, mix the spelt flour with the sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Add the cold butter in small pieces and the vanilla bean paste, and mix everything with your fingers to create different sized streusels.

    3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Transfer the strawberries to a medium-sized baking dish and distribute the streusels evenly on top. Sprinkle with some coarse brown sugar if desired. Bake the strawberry crumble for about 30-35 minutes – the streusels should be nicely browned, and the strawberries should bubble up and be visible between the streusels in several spots. Remove from the oven and let cool down a bit. Serve warm with some vanilla ice cream or vanilla sauce.
