Quick and easy – that’s the motto for many of our cooking recipes. We don’t just cook on weekends, and during the week, after work, there’s often simply not enough time to spend hours cooking up a three-course dinner. When you need something really fast, these (Air Fryer) Tarte Flambée Bread Rolls are just perfect! They taste absolutely delicious and are ready in no time at all. You can’t even find a Netflix series to watch in the time they are ready…

I guess everyone is familiar with Tartes Flambées. Those thin, let’s say flat breads, with sour cream or crème fraîche, bacon and onion topping. We have several recipes for tartes flambées here on the blog – including a great one for Mini Alsace Tartes Flambées. Super delicious and also very easy to prepare. But because of the homemade dough, you need a bit more time to make them compared to the bread rolls here. The time you’d need to prepare the dough is pretty much the time you need to finish and serve the bread rolls here…

These Tarte Flambée Bread Rolls are simply perfect when you need something really quick. Our Air Fryer* is quite small but fits four halved bread rolls at once – enough for one person. Other appliances probably have more space and allow you to bake several more at once. Thanks to the short preparation time, it’s no problem to quickly prepare enough Flammkuchen rolls for several people, even with a small Air Fryer. They should cool down briefly after air-frying anyway, so you don’t burn your tongue on the hot topping – by then you’ve already thrown the second batch in the Air Fryer.

If you’d like to serve these little bread rolls as a snack with some wine or beer for a larger group, you can, of course, bake them in a regular oven. You can fit quite a lot on a baking sheet. It just takes a little longer with preheating, etc. They are still quick and easy to make. Absolutely no issue! The baking time and temperature for that are listed in the recipe notes…

We usually use regular wheat bread rolls for this tarte flambée alternative, but you can use any kind of bread roll, tbh. They don’t even have to be fresh – if they’ve been sitting around for a day and aren’t rock hard, they’re still perfectly fine for this recipe. You could also use slices of bread as an alternative. Some homemade sourdough bread or potato bread, for example, work both wonderful!

A few tips for optimal results

    Choosing the bread rolls.
Fresh, very soft bread rolls crisp up faster in the air fryer but can also dry out around the edges. Slightly older rolls are also good because they are more stable and hold the toppings better. Alternatively, ciabatta, baguette, or some sourdough bread also work for a more rustic version.

Fine-tune the temperature of your Air Fryer.
Not every air fryer heats up equally well/quickly. The 170°C (340°F) in the recipe is a good guideline, but depending on the Air Fryer, a slightly lower temperature (160°C/320°F) with perhaps 1–2 minutes more cooking time can ensure a more even browning. This is especially important with models that have a powerful heating element, preventing the onions and cream from browning too quickly.

Use different cheeses for different textures.
Cheese doesn’t have much of a place in a »traditional« tarte flambée – but it works perfectly with the bread rolls here and makes the result especially delicious! Please don’t hesitate to experiment a little. Mozzarella gives you a softer topping that stretches more easily, mountain cheese or Gruyère makes everything more flavorful, and for those who like blue cheese… also very delicious!

Maybe stick with the classic Tarte Flambée version?
For a more traditional version, you could use crème fraîche and/or sour cream just as they are – without any cheese. Season well with salt and pepper if you don’t use cheese and don’t forget the chives at the end.

As mentioned earlier, we have several recipes for tartes flambées here on the blog – unlike these tarte flambée bread rolls here, some dough needs to be prepared for those recipes. It’s not complicated, but it does take some time. If you’d like to try something different, you can check out our Mini Alsace Tartes Flambées – they’re almost like the original, just in miniature. Perfect if you’re entertaining a crowd and don’t want to deal with all the crumbs when cutting the usual tarte flambée…

Of course, tarte flambée doesn’t always have to be topped with crème fraîche, bacon, and onions. Once you’ve prepared a batch of dough, you can basically do whatever you like with it. Our Tarte Flambée with Arugula, Tomatoes & Serrano Ham, for example, is a very popular variation of the classic version. We love making them when the arugula from the raised bed on the terrace is ready to harvest…

    1. Mix the sour cream with crème fraîche, stir in the grated cheese and season with salt and pepper. Peel the onions and cut them into thin rings.

    2. Cut the bread rolls in half and flatten them slightly. Spread the cream and cheese mixture evenly on top, sprinkle with diced ham and onion rings, and season with some additional salt and pepper.

    3. Preheat the Air Fryer (if necessary) to 170°C (340°F). Place the bread in the Air Fryer basket and bake for about 7-8 minutes. The baking time may vary depending on the appliance you are using, so it is best to check occasionally to make sure nothing burns. The Tarte Flambée bread rolls are ready when the diced ham looks crispy, and you can see some browning on top of the cream and cheese mixture. Decorate the bread rolls with some chopped chives to your liking (optional).

    Note:
If you don’t have an Air Fryer, you can also bake the bread rolls in the oven, of course. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the rolls for about 10-12 minutes. Again, check them occasionally to make sure they don’t get too dark.

I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake – for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers – and it seems they like it most of the time. ;)
