Do you know “Hocus Pocus”? The movie from the 90s? It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. Bette Midler was just terrific as Winifred Sanderson ;) Finally, after almost 30 years of waiting a second movie with the Sanderson sisters will be released soon. To celebrate this special day I made some delicious Hocus Pocus (Spell Book) Brownies. Delicious fudgy brownies packed with chocolate and walnuts and a special “look & feel” ;)

If you don’t know the movie it’s about time to change that. The story about the Sanderson sisters from Salem that come back to life after 300 years – just for one (Halloween) night, trying to suck out the life of innocent children. A classic Halloween bedtime story ;P
I loved the movie from the first time I saw it – back in the days. Not just because of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The movie is funny and the song “I put a spell on you” is so good. Makes you want to dance all night. This year, a sequel is finally coming to Disney+ to continue the story of the Sanderson sisters. To make the movie night perfect I whipped up some brownies and turned them into little spell books – based on Winifred’s spell book from the movie, of course! ;)
As you can see in the pictures, the little (creepy) bug-eyed spell books are not only suitable for a “Hocus Pocus” movie party – they are also nice for any other Halloween party. And that holiday is also coming up soon, right? ;)

I have to admit – the spell book brownies are not really that small. You might not be able to tell from the pictures right away – they actually have a decent size. About as big as two normal brownies together. You better share one of them with someone else… or fight for them and the winner gets the eye ;P
About those eyes. I used candy eyes that have a texture similar to gummy bears. Something very sweet with a sour filling. You can get them here in Germany in supermarkets (around Halloween). They are also available online (there is a link in the recipe). Feel free to use something else. You could also make them yourself with some white chocolate and food coloring (and a mold for small spheres), for example. Even though the eyes here look cool – I would not eat them personally. Too much sugar ;P
I am sooo excited about the upcoming movie! I’ll get out my Roomba and then wait on the sofa until the movie is online at Disney+. Who is with me? ;P
INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
For the brownies:
1/2 cup (120g) butter, melted
1/2 cup (100g) sugar
1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (60g) cocoa powder
1 pinch of salt
3.5 oz. (100g) semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
3.5 oz. (100g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
3.5 oz. (100g) walnuts, chopped
For the decoration:
5.3 oz. (150g) milk chocolate glaze
6 Trolli Glotzer*
1 oz. (30g) semi-sweet chocolate glaze
Für die Brownies:
120g Butter, geschmolzen
100g Zucker (oder Xylitol)
100g brauner Zucker
2 Eier (L)
2 TL Vanille Extrakt
60g Mehl (Type 5405)
60g Kakaopulver
1 Prise Salz
100g Schokolade, gehackt
100g Zartbitter Schokodrops
100g Walnüsse, gehackt
Für die Dekoration:
150g Vollmilch Kuvertüre
6 Trolli Glotzer*
30g Zartbitter Kuvertüre

DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
2. Add the melted butter and sugar to a large bowl. Mix until well combined. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and mix well. In a second bowl mix the flour, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined. Add to the bowl with the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Add the chopped chocolate, chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts and fold in. Transfer the batter to the prepared baking pan, smooth out the top, and bake for about 18-20 minutes. Check with a toothpick – the brownies are done when the toothpick comes out mostly clean. Some moist crumbs are ok. Take out of the oven and let cool down completely then cut into six equal pieces.
3. Melt the chocolate glaze and coat the brownies with it. Cut off the back of the eyes (Trolli Glotzer) with a sharp knife so they are a bit smaller/flatter, then press them into the chocolate coating on the brownies. Use some of the remaining glaze to cover the top and bottom of the eyes slightly – these will be the eyelids. Let everything dry. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate glaze and fill it into a piping bag with a small round piping tip. Decorate the brownies (see photos) and allow the chocolate to set. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days max.
3 Tage lagern.
