Gooseberries don’t have a particularly long season here in Germany – once you can find them on the local farmer’s market, it doesn’t take long for them to take a break again until next year. To be able to enjoy these little fellas a little longer, we like to cook a simple Gooseberry Chutney. Once this is in the glass jars, you have a tasty side dish »sauce« for many months.
I’m not sure whether Pickled Gherkins with Mustard Seeds are something special from Germany and our neighboring countries or not. Probably not quite… but I also don’t think you can find them everywhere in the world. Many people will probably never have heard of them ;P We love these pickled gherkins a lot here – the perfect snack or side for a classic »German Abendbrot«. I guess that makes me very German ;P
As a diabetic, I always have to keep an eye on what I eat. In theory, I can eat anything, but some foods can cause problems. First and foremost, of course, anything with too much sugar added. That’s why I like to fall back on sugar-free or sugar-reduced alternatives – or I come up with something at home without added sugar. This Strawberry Vanilla Jam is made with (almost) no added sugar. Great, if you want to eat less of that white stuff ;P
Once you started dipping, it’s hard to stop! Mutabbal aka. Baba Ganoush, as most people probably know this eggplant dip, is a traditional mezze dish of the Arabic cuisine. My version here is prepared using an Air Fryer, making this dish super easy. If you don’t have one of these appliances at home, you can still make the dip – a regular oven does the job just as good ;)
If you have a garden at home, you will certainly have planted cucumbers – at least once. Right?! Cucumbers are really uncomplicated plants that don’t require a lot of attention. We have often grown them in large flower pots and been successful every time. So much success that we have even been able to make Homemade Pickled Gherkins several times already. What could be better than being able to use your own vegetables for something like that ;)
Anyone with a garden (lucky you!) will certainly be familiar with this type of situation – you are taking care of your plants for months and then (suddenly) they are all ready to harvest. All at the same time. Now you have more veggies than you can possibly eat. So what can you do? You don’t want anything to go to waste, right? Well… you could give the veggies to friends, or you could freeze or pickle some veggies! Pickling is one of the best ways to preserve veggies for several months without much effort ;)
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake - for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers - and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
