After work, not everyone wants to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to prepare food. We definitely belong to that group of people. That’s why we prefer simple and less complicated dinners. Something like these delicious Air Fryer Cheese Melts with BÜRGER Maultaschen. They are just perfect for busy folks like us. Super quick to prepare and really tasty!

You can do a lot more with pre-made Maultaschen (and other dumplings) than just prepare them according to the packet instructions, right?! ;P Everyone in Germany knows delicious Maultaschen like those from BÜRGER (www.buerger.de*), from supermarkets. They are normally cooked in a broth or soup, but you can do much more with them. If you take a look at the BÜRGER website and their recipe finder*, you will quickly see that there is so much more possible than just using them in soup…

I’ve often been inspired by the BÜRGER recipes myself. We have a package of Maultaschen in our fridge pretty much all the time. Growing up in the South of Germany, it’s almost impossible to get around these tasty little dumplings. We frequently had them for lunch at home… and it seems I somehow brought this habit with me to Berlin when I left home. ;)

Back then, however, people were not really creative when it was time to prepare Maultaschen. Frying leftover Maultaschen in some butter and serving them with sauce instead of reheating them in soup was considered exotic and special. If you take a look at the recipes from the BÜRGER kitchen crew*, you will quickly see that you can do a lot more!

My recipe for these cheese melts here can also be found on the kitchen crew site, among the recipes of many other bloggers. If you like recipes with dumplings and pasta, you should definitely check out the page.

The Cheese Melts with BÜRGER Maultaschen are a quick weeknight dish designed for the preparation inside an Air Fryer. Many families have one of these appliances in their kitchen at home these days, right?! You can prepare the cheese melts in a regular oven as well if you don’t have an Air Fryer. No biggie. ;)

In case you are planning to prepare the cheese melts in the oven, you should preheat the oven to a temperature of 200°C (390°F) fan-forced and then follow the recipe as is. Start by roasting the Maultaschen, then the bread with the sour cream topping, and finally combine the two with the cheese. The baking times may be a little longer here. I recommend to check more often and adjust the times, if necessary.

In addition to the Maultaschen, there are many other products from BÜRGER that are suitable for a quick weeknight dinner. If you have a package of gnocchis at home, you could make Gnocchi with Chorizo, Sun-dried Tomatoes & Spinach, for example. Delicious! Or if you prefer Schupfnudeln (those thick German potato noodles), you should definitely take a look at our German Schupfnudeln & Cabbage Skillet. A family favorite for sure!

    DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG

    1. Cut the Maultaschen into slices at a slight angle. Place them in the basked of an Air Fryer and drizzle or spray the pieces with a little olive oil. Roast the maultaschen at a temperature of 190°C (375°F) for about 5 minutes.

    2. While the Maultaschen are in the Air Fryer, prepare the topping. Mix sour cream with crème fraîche and mustard. Add the diced bacon and about half of the grated cheese and mix in. Season with salt and pepper. Spread the mixture evenly on the two slices of bread.

    3. Remove the Maultaschen from the Air Fryer and set them aside. Place the bread with in the Air Fryer basket and bake it for about 5 minutes at 190°C (375°F). When the time is up, place the roasted Maultaschen on top of the sandwiches and add the remaining cheese as well. Bake/roast the bread for another 5 minutes at the same temperature.

    4. If you like, you can top/decorate the cheese melts with cherry tomatoes and some chopped parsley and drizzle with a little olive oil before serving. The cheese melts go well with a small green salad.

    Tips:
If you have a larger Air Fryer, you can roast/bake the Maultaschen and the bread with the sour cream mixture on top next to each other at the same time. After that, you can continue with step 3 and bring everything together with the cheese.

    About me

Hi, my name is Marc. I’m a graphic designer.
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake – for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers – and it seems they like it most of the time. ;)
