Do you know what’s best when baking banana bread? The moment you open the oven and within a few moments, the whole kitchen smells like banana bread. Love it! The same will happen to you when baking this Nutella Swirled Banana Bread. On top your kitchen will also smell like warm Nutella… which is a good thing, right? ;)
»Everything gets better with some Nutella«. One of my favorite quotes back in the days. Who said that? I did :P I am not using Nutella as much as I did in the past because of the huge amount of sugar in the product, but for a cake or a banana bread like this one here I make an exemption. Sometimes you just have to enjoy what you have and not think about calories and sugar and all of that…
Is Nutella »problematic«?
The answer is yes. I am using »Nutella« here more as a general term or placeholder for spreads with nougat and chocolate. Everybody knows the name, and it’s less complicated to write ;P Many people have a problem with the brand – not only because of the excessive amount of sugar in the spread but also because they use palm oil. Even though Ferrero has run several big campaigns to defend the use of palm oil in their products… the use is still questionable and you can make a product like this easily without palm oil. Many other brands – often brands that produce organic spreads and jam – show how to make a delicious spread without any problematic ingredients. So use what you think is the best product. The banana bread works with all chocolate nougat spreads ;) Just as an aside note…
Anyway. Baking this banana bread is pretty easy. Everybody can do it. It’s basically just mashing the bananas and then mixing everything else together. Plus some chocolate nougat spread added. Et voilà – one of the best banana bread recipes of the world. The only thing you have to keep in mind when adding the chocolate spread – do not mix like a crazy person. If you mix the batter too much, you will end up with an evenly brown batter – we want swirls and pockets of gooey chocolate nougat spread in the baked banana bread. The result will be so much better, believe me ;)
Well… now matter how many swirls you will make – the combination of chocolate and banana, in general, is fantastic. I really love it. As a kid I ate bananas with pieces of chocolate as dessert – so good! Nothing I would do today cause you know – too much sugar and calories. But I really loved it ;)
Me not doing that anymore does not mean you should not try ;P
INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
2 cups mashed bananas (about 3 large bananas)
1/2 cup (120g) butter, melted
1 cup (200g) brown sugar
2 medium eggs
1/2 cup (120ml) milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 cups (390g) all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup (150g) nutella (or similar spread)
3 große Bananen, zerdrückt
120g geschmolzene Butter
200g brauner Zucker
2 Eier (M)
120ml Milch
1 TL Vanille Extrakt
390g Mehl (Type 550)
2 TL Backpulver
1 1/2 TL Natron
1 TL Salz
150g Nutella (o.ä. Nuss-Nougat-Aufstrich)
DIRECTIONS / ANLEITUNG
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a large loaf pan (about 12×4 inches or similar) and line with some baking parchment. Set aside. Mash the bananas and set aside. Melt the butter and let cool down a bit.
2. Add the melted butter and brown sugar to a large mixing bowl and mix until well combined. Add the eggs one by one and mix well after each addition. Next, add milk and vanilla extract and mix in. Mix the flour with baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the bowl and mix until just combined. Add the mashed bananas and fold in. Pour the batter into the prepared baking tin and smooth out the top. Add the Nutella (or similar spread) on top. Use a spoon or spatula and fold it into the batter – do not mix a lot, you want to be able to see swirls of chocolate in the baked banana bread. Place in the center of the oven and bake about 50-55 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
3. Take the banana bread out of the oven and let cool down in the baking tin for about 10 minutes, then remove carefully and let cool down completely on a wire rack.
