There are some things out there I thought I would never have make myself – candied fruits for example. I always thought if you need something like that you can get it in a supermarket or one of those fancy sweets shops… well I was wrong :P
Try to get some candied oranges and you will fail miserably here in Berlin. I am not talking about “Orangeat” – the diced sticky stuff you use in christmas bakes – I mean good looking slices of candied fruits ;) Mission Impossible!
Well – if you can’t get it in the store – make it yourself. One of my favorite things to say. And do. ;)
So here is an easy recipe to make candied fruits – oranges, lemons or limes. They are great for decorations but if you like it sweet, you can also eat them as they are as snack – or maybe dip in melted chocolate…? :)
INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
1 1/2 cups (300g) sugar
1/2 cup (120ml) water
1 tbsp. orange liquor (optional)
300g Zucker
120ml Wasser
1 EL Orangenlikör (optional)
DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
2. Add the sugar, water and orange liquor (optional) to a saucepan and bring to a boil. You should get a clear thick syrup. Reduce the heat and add the orange/lemon slices. Let simmer for about 1 hour – check from time to time and make sure the slices are covered with the syrup. Take off the heat, cover and let stand for 12-24 hours. Take the orange/lemon slices out of the syrup and let drain. Place on a baking sheet with baking parchment and let dry for one day in a warm place. If the slices are still not dry, place in the oven with 140˚F (60°C) and let dry for 2 hours (turn upside down after 1 hour).
3. If the orange/lemon slices are dry, you can eat them as they are or use them for decoration. You can also dip them in melted chocolate (and let dry again) to get a sweet chocolate snack.

Have you tried the same recipe but with other (non citrus) fruits like mango ? Or ginger? I will definitely try with the orange but i live in the tropics so i would love to do the same thing with the local tropical fruits as this looks like an easy way to candy fruits. Thanks
Hi.
Haven’t tried it with other fruits, but I guess making candied fruits with mango works the same way. You basically replace the liquids in the fruits with sugar by cooking ;)
Cheers
