“May the Force be with you!” That should have been the motto today. You probably already know it – May, the 4th is the “official” Star Wars Day and everything revolves around the well-known space saga. I’m a fan of the movies and wanted to celebrate with a little something from the oven, but then the planned “Chewbacca Donuts” suddenly turned into “Trash Can Chocolate Donuts”… I don’t know exactly how that happened. Really! ;P
Fantasy and reality are two different things. Obviously. How you imagine something in your mind and how it comes out, in the end, are two completely different pairs of shoes (that’s how we would say in German). I wanted to create sweet and “hairy” chocolate donuts today, that should have looked like something inspired by one of my favorite Star Wars characters aka. “Chewbacca”. The big, cute, and hairy thing which only communicates with those roaring sounds… you all know him, right? Well… would have, should have, could have …
Unfortunately, everything turned out very different as I imagined and now we’re sitting here with donuts that look like they have been thrown into a trash can and then ended up on a plate. A trash can that was full of chocolate bars, pretzels, cookies, and nuts… nothin’ nasty, of course ;P
Yeah… that’s life. Sometimes you have to admit you failed. The chocolate donuts were easy to make but when it was time to create the fur on top I flopped miserably. Well – I just did not have the right ingredients to make a chocolate ganache. No heavy cream – no chocolate ganache, that’s all. So I decided to try something different (in hopes it still would look like something that could pass as Chewbacca donuts). I thought “…just take some candy bars and chop them up, it will look like fur”. Well, not really, as you can see. Cookie crumbs chopped up stuff do not create the illusion of fur! Now we have donuts with “everything brownish I could find in my cabinets” – Easter bunny leftovers, Kit Kat bars, cocoa nibs, pecans, salted pretzels, Daim bars, and so on. Everything I had and needed to go ;P
Well… I created worse things. These donuts are actually really nice. Chocolate with chocolate and some crunchy stuff – what’s not to love? They are a bit messy and a pain in the a*** to eat because of the caramel… but if you are looking for a sugar bomb that is easy to prepare… you should definitely try them. Pretty sure Chewbacca would have liked them too – even though they do not look the slightest bit like him.
INGREDIENTS / ZUTATEN
For the donuts:
1.4 oz. (40g) butter, melted
3 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 medium egg
2/3 cup (160ml) buttermilk
3/4 cup (100g) all-purpose flour
1/3 cup (40g) cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking powder
pinch of salt
3 tbsp. blanched almonds, chopped
For the topping:
3-4 tbsp. caramel (e.g. Bonne Maman*)
about 2 cups chopped chocolate candy, chocolate, pretzels, nuts, cookies etc.
Für die Donuts:
40g Butter, geschmolzen
3 EL brauner Zucker
1 TL Vanille Extrakt
1 Ei (M)
160ml Buttermilch
100g Mehl (Type 550)
40g Kakaopulver
1/2 TL Backpulver
Prise Salz
3 EL Mandeln, blanchiert & gehackt
Für das Topping:
3-4 EL Karmel (z.B. von Bonne Maman*)
etwa 2 Tassen gehackte Schokoriegel, Schokolade, Salzbrezeln, Nüsse, Cookies usw.
DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG
2. Add the melted butter and sugar to a large bowl and mix until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and egg and mix until well combined. Add half of the buttermilk and mix in. Mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a second bowl to combine, then add together with the remaining buttermilk to the bowl and mix until just combined. Add the chopped almonds and fold in. Fill the donut molds until they are almost full and bake for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean. Take out of the oven, let cool in the pan for some time, then remove and let cool down completely on a wire rack. Clean and grease the pan and repeat with remaining dough to get more donuts.
3. Chop or crush the chocolate candy (e.g. KitKat, Snickers, Maltesers), chocolate, salted pretzels, nuts and/or cookies and mix in a bowl. Cover the top and sides of the donuts with caramel and then press them into the chocolate candy mixture or sprinkle it on top – you want as much as possible sticking to the donuts. Set aside so the caramel can dry a bit. It will still be a bit of a mess eating the donuts ;)
