When I think of classic bakes from Germany, two cakes immediately spring to mind – Black Forest Cake and Bee Sting Cake aka. Bienenstich. Of course, there are many more, but these are the two cakes that have probably been served at home (back in the day) the most. This Bee Sting Cake with Strawberries is a variation of the classic Bienenstich – a great option in summer when fresh strawberries are available from local farmers :)
When it comes to Mother’s Day it’s all about cake – not flowers. I think something baked is much better as a gift instead of flowers. My mom prefers flowers in the garden where they can be enjoyed for a long time… not in a vase for a few days only ;) I think cake is always the better gift/surprise – not only for Mother’s Day. This delicious Strawberry Heart Cake might be an obvious way to say to Mom »I love you«, but I am pretty sure everybody else would love to get this cake as well ;P
Special occasions need special cakes, right? A birthday without a cake would not be perfect, right? ;) How about a small Funfetti Birthday Cake like this one here? Whoever gets one of these will definitely be happy. I would be happy if someone gave me a cake like that. Unfortunately, I am the one that has to bake those cakes for others. Always ;P
This Heart Strawberry Cheesecake is a type of German »Käsesahnetorte« and one of many classic cakes in Germany that is loved and hated at the same time ;P Back in the day, when I was young, this type of cake was the »hot shit« everybody loved. There was no family gathering without one of these (or something very similar) on the table. Nowadays, you see cakes like that a little less often and some say they are »old-fashioned«… like cakes you would only serve grandma and grandpa. I think it’s time for an »cake intervention«! ;P Let’s make these cakes great again! Who’s in?! Probably only people 45 and older ;)
»More is more, and less is a bore« – something Iris Apfel said once. I could not agree more looking at this cake here ;) I am pretty sure she would like this Retro Buttercream Layer Cake here. It looks like it’s from the past, decorated so much it almost tips over. If you look at old cook books you will definitely find stuff like that – with even more decorations. There is actually a lot of empty space on this cake… should I have used more buttercream? ;P
Easter without a cake is like a birthday without a celebration. You could do both, but I guess it would be strange for some people ;) Luckily, I got the perfect cake for Easter: a delicious German Hazelnut Eierlikör (Advocaat) Layer Cake. If you are a fan of advocaat this might be the perfect cake for you. I know not everyone likes this type of booze – some consider it to be a »grandma« liquor… but I kind of like it. At least for baking ;P
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake - for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers - and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
