I think pies are something where almost everyone can find his/her “favorite specimen” – there are so many recipes it is hard to not find something you like ;) Here in Germany, it’s different. We hardly bake pies. Just not in the repertoire of most bakers because there are not many traditional recipes for that. I love me a good pie. A delicious one like this Chocolate Walnut Pie, for example. So good! I start drooling just thinking of it ;P
I always have problems saying the name correctly: Spa-na-ko-pi-ta. I tend to mix up some of the letters and then it’s suddenly something completely different ;) Maybe I should just describe what it is – spinach strudel with filo dough. No. I have to remember the correct name. This dish deserves to be pronounced correctly. It’s one of my favorite pastries from Greece! Spanakopita! ;)
In German, there is not really a 100% suitable translation for the word “pie” – is it a cake, something like a tart? Well… not quite, right? Of course, pies exist within the category of cakes, but they are a bit more special I’d say. I guess it took a while, but by now everyone here understands what you mean when you talk about pie. Unless you are a group of German mathematics… they might think of something else first ;P Anyway. I got a pie for you! A delicious Buttermilk Pie!
The end of the month is almost here. That means it’s time for another “Bake Together – The Baking Surprise” with Andrea from Zimtkeks & Apfeltarte. This month is all about “autumn pies”. I mean autumn is here. Seems quite logic to make pies that are fall themed, right? ;P The chances we gonna take the same route are quite slim this time I guess. There are so many pies you can make… so I am really excited to see what Andrea did this time. I decided to bake this veeeery delicious Damson Plum Pie here. If you like damson plums and simple cakes like a Plum Tray Bake you probably love this pie here ;)
Sweet potatoes made it to Germany quite some time ago – there’s hardly a burger place that does not offer sweet potato fries these days. I like them a lot and most of the time I prefer them over regular french fries… if deep-fried properly ;) However, I have the feeling that sweet potatoes did not make it much further – sweet desserts and bakes with sweet potatoes are still not common here. Americans do much more with these veggies. This classic Sweet Potato Pie is a good example of that – sweet and very delicious.
Christmas is getting closer day by day… tomorrow is the last Sunday before Christmas aka. Advent Sunday. It’s the same every year – as soon as December arrives time passes much quicker and then suddenly Christmas is here ;) Fortunately, I am still happy with all the Christmas stuff that is all around us… you might want to ask me again a day before Christmas if that is still the case. Anyway. Something you can do before, on the day, or after Christmas: a delicious Apple Cranberry Pie! One of my favorite bakes during winter.
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake - for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers - and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
