We’ve all been there – you get invited somewhere and don’t really know what to bring as a little »thank-you gift«. We like to solve this problem with Homemade Chocolate Truffles, which you wrap up nicely and give to the hosts of the party. This is a sweet and tasty snack that everyone knows from the Christmas market – Roasted (Candied) Almonds are very popular here in Germany. A little bag of these almonds can be quite expensive at the Christmas market, though. Well, why not make them from scratch at home? It’s an easy task and the result is equally delicious. No need to spend your hard-earned money on a Christmas market ;P
Around Christmas, there is no way to get around this spice mix when baking – a Gingerbread Spice Mix can be used for many baked goods. Many supermarkets sell the spice mix these days, but with a few common spices you can mix your own blend quickly and easily at home. Without gingerbread spice, the Christmas season would be only half as delicious ;)
Gooseberries don’t have a particularly long season here in Germany – once you can find them on the local farmer’s market, it doesn’t take long for them to take a break again until next year. To be able to enjoy these little fellas a little longer, we like to cook a simple Gooseberry Chutney. Once this is in the glass jars, you have a tasty side dish »sauce« for many months.
I’m not sure whether Pickled Gherkins with Mustard Seeds are something special from Germany and our neighboring countries or not. Probably not quite… but I also don’t think you can find them everywhere in the world. Many people will probably never have heard of them ;P We love these pickled gherkins a lot here – the perfect snack or side for a classic »German Abendbrot«. I guess that makes me very German ;P
As a diabetic, I always have to keep an eye on what I eat. In theory, I can eat anything, but some foods can cause problems. First and foremost, of course, anything with too much sugar added. That’s why I like to fall back on sugar-free or sugar-reduced alternatives – or I come up with something at home without added sugar. This Strawberry Vanilla Jam is made with (almost) no added sugar. Great, if you want to eat less of that white stuff ;P
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake - for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers - and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
