In Germany, almost everyone will have memories about gingerbread houses – many families love baking and decorating them with kids for Christmas. At least when I was a kid. ;) I don’t think this is the same for »Book Nooks«. Not everyone will know immediately what you mean by that or they might think of something completely different. But don’t worry – by the end of this article you will know what a Wednesday Gingerbread Book Nook is and how to bake one… yes, baking! ;P
A famous Swiss TV ad makes it very clear – be very careful when claiming that you invented something. If it’s a Swiss invention, you might get into trouble when saying it was your idea. ;P So in all transparency and honesty – I did not invent these Swiss Nut Cookies aka. Schweizer Nusstaler. Nope. Wasn’t me. I just made them, because they are so delicious! I adapted the recipe slightly, but I did not invent them. I don’t want anyone from Switzerland jumping at me from behind screaming »Wer hat’s erfunden?!« ;P
When it comes to baking Christmas cookies, many people make plans in advance on what to bake. It’s no different here. Sometimes you need a batch of cookies a bit more spontaneously… maybe because most of them have already been eaten, or you have a surprise visitor coming. These simple Spritz Cookies aka. Christmas Stollen is an essential part of Christmas – similar to bratwurst and mulled wine at the Christmas market. You could not eat/drink it, but the market would be only half as good. ;P We usually bake Stollen quite early in December, or even at the end of November, because it needs a long time to develop the right flavors and texture. This Easy German Quark Stollen for Christmas goes a different route. That one can be made only days before Christmas, because it is ready to eat within a day or two. ;)
A visit to a German Christmas market without candied almonds would only be half as good, right? We always end up with a small bag of them in our pockets. In recent years, however, variations of classic candied almonds have become increasingly popular. There are so many recipes out there for these simple cookies, I think I’ve seen hundreds of recipes over the years… but I’ve never made them myself until last year. But what can I say – they are so delicious! The question remains – why did I wait so long to bake them?! I don’t know! ;)
I love my job, but in between I love to bake and try new things in the kitchen. A lot of my friends and colleagues encourage me to bake - for a very simple reason: they get the leftovers - and it seems they like it most of the time ;)
